Tips For Winter Cycling

No Comments on Tips For Winter Cycling

I have to admit I used to be a fair weather cyclist however the more biking I did when I stopped over winter i really missed it and I really struggled with the fitness when I started again in Spring.  So I bought some weather specific, biking clothes and have enjoyed winter cycling since.

We at campingandoutdoorliving.co.uk have picked a few tips for winter cycling, it is not an exhaustive list, so if you have any to add please send them in.

Be safe be seen

Whether you are on or off the roadyou must have good quality lights.  I am a cyclist and  I am really surprised how many cyclist I see that are barely visiable on their bikes.  This week alone I have seen a number (or should that be i have struggled to see them!) on my commute to work.

Check your lights before you head out, some take spare batteries if they are on a long ride.    Switch them on before dusk to make sure you are visible before dark.

Wear bright clothing, ok some people don’t because it doesn’t look great but the brighter you are the more you will be seen.

Clothing

It is tempting to pile on lots of layers when it is cold however this could make you sweat more, create more moisture and actually make you even colder.

Good quality,  waterproof, windproof and layering cycling clothing willl help to prevent this.

Check the weather before you set off, obviously when you set off it will feel cooler, when you start your ride you will start to warm up but in the winter the weather can change and if you are doing long distances it is good to be prepared for all weathers.

Gloves are a must for me, under helmet hats, neck winter masks are all to be considered.

Mudguards

They don’t look great but as well as keeping your bum,  back, bike (chain and waterbottle etc)clean, they also keeps your fellow riders behind you clean!

Bike Maintence

It is important to keep your bike in tip top condition all year around but even more so in the winter.

Keep your bike clean,  if you are biking on roads that have been gritted, make sure that i its washed straight away.

Punctures seem to happen more to me in the winter, so its important to take spare inners, a working pump or C02 cartridges with you.
