Walking for wellbeing

While doing a little research for the Winter Walking post I came across the British Heart Foundation site – which is a great reminder that a walk, even a short walk, is not only good for our heart health but also for our mental health too.

Walking for wellbeingIt can sometimes be hard to get out and about when the days get shorter. But the colder seasons can surprise you with some refreshing walks. Why not try some mindful walking to get ready for the new year? With hundreds of special woodlands and parks in our care, there’s plenty of space to find a new route this winter.

Walking meditations can be done for as long or as little as you need, and any time spent walking can reunite you with how your body and mind work together. Even seemingly normal walks, like the walk to work or from the supermarket to your car, can be opportunities for mindfulness.

BHF – How to start getting active
Regular moderate-intensity physical activity reduces your risk of coronary heart disease and many other conditions and can boost mental wellbeing. It can also help manage risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Exercise is also a great way to keep your weight in check, especially if combined with a healthy diet.
